Somerled: Hammer of the Norse | McPhee, Kathleen | Vital Spark | 2004 | This is a biography of Somerled (c.1113-64), a warrior who spent much of his early adult life fighting the Norse from his base in Argyll. He married into the Norse king`s family in c.1140 and the serious fighting ceased for over a decade until the king was murdered. War resumed and Somerled took the whole of Argyll by force. On becoming King of the Isles he was seen as a threat to the Scottish king and in 1163 Somerled led 15,000 soldiers against Malcolm IV. Somerled died in 1164, having established the importance of the Lordship of the Isles. | 1174 |
