As he teenager he worked on steamers and travelled widely. He then worked as a journalist in London before moving back to Dundee to become editor of the "People`s Journal". He was with the Black Watch during the First World War and he sent home poems and sketches describing the horrors of the battlefield. "Ballads of Battle" and "Work-a-day Warriors" were published in 1916 and 1917 respectively. After the war he moved to London, working on newspapers.
