075242825X no image available David I Richard Oram Tempus Publishing 2004 A biography of King David I (1084-1153). He spend much of his childhood in England at the court of Henry I. After his elder brother Edgar died, David inherited southern Scotland (below the line of the rivers Clyde and Forth). His brother Alexander became king but David suceeded him in 1124 upon Alexander`s death. Various reforms were brought in by David, including trading burghs, silver coinage and the introduction of numerous monasteries in order to develop education. 1338
1862322023 David II, 1329-71: The Bruce Dynasty in Scotland Penman, Michael Tuckwell Press 2004 This biography of King David II (1324-71) describes a life of wars, politics and intrigue, often involving England. He was married at the age of 4 to the 7 year old sister of the English king and he became the king of Scotland in 1331. After losing the throne to Edward Baliol he fled to France but returned in 1341. At the Battle of Neville`s Cross he was defeated by the English, taken prisoner and later ransommed. Once back on the throne, he furthered the idea of union with England, a notion which was rejected by the Scottish Parliament. 1213
1903238242 Somerled: Hammer of the Norse McPhee, Kathleen Vital Spark 2004 This is a biography of Somerled (c.1113-64), a warrior who spent much of his early adult life fighting the Norse from his base in Argyll. He married into the Norse king`s family in c.1140 and the serious fighting ceased for over a decade until the king was murdered. War resumed and Somerled took the whole of Argyll by force. On becoming King of the Isles he was seen as a threat to the Scottish king and in 1163 Somerled led 15,000 soldiers against Malcolm IV. Somerled died in 1164, having established the importance of the Lordship of the Isles. 1174
