This page explains how to navigate your way to the list of books you are searching for.

General arrangement
The lists of books are arranged according to two factors:
1 Areas of Scotland (Glasgow, Edinburgh, etc.) These are described in the Help page called areas of Scotland.
2 Subjects (history, geography, transport, etc.). The are described in the Help page called subjects.
The subjects are subdivided into topics and more information about these is given in the Help page called subjects and topics.

Simple Search for a book about Scotland
If you want to find a book that deals with a Scotland-wide subject then follow these steps:
1 Go to the Scotland Booksearch page.
2 Select a "subject".
3 Select a "topic". This will now give you a booklist.

Simple Search for a book about eg. Glasgow
If you want to find a book that deals solely with a Glasgow subject then follow these steps:
1 Go to the Scotland Booksearch page.
2 Select "Glasgow" in the "areas" column.
3 Select a "subject".
4 Select a "topic". This will now give you a booklist.
In some cases, a book will appear in more than one booklist.
Example 1: a history book covering two centuries would be included in the booklist for each of the centuries. If the book covered three or more centuries, it would probably be included in History`s "general" topic booklist.
Example 2: a history book about "The Auld Alliance" (with France) would be included in the subject "History" and the subject "genealogy and links with other countries".

Looking for books in various subjects
If the books you want all deal with the same area (eg. Glasgow) but are on different subjects then follow these steps:
1 Follow the Simple Search instructions above for your first subject.
2 Select a new subject.
3 Select a new topic.

Looking for books in various areas
1 Follow the Simple Search instructions above for your first area.
2 Select a new area.
3 Select a subject.
4 Select a topic.

Advanced Search over different areas
Many books cover more than one area. Consquently, some books are included in more than one areas` booklist.
An example: If you are looking for a book on the Scottish shipbuilding industry then the relevant books should be in the "Scotland" area under the subject heading "Industry". However, if you are looking for shipbuilding on the River Clyde then most books will probably be in the "Glasgow" area. Other books could be in the West Dumbartonshire area (for Clydebank) or in the Inverclyde section (for Greenock). A general survey of Clydeside shipbuilding would be found in the Central and South Scotland region.
